I've probably walked past this painting in the Musee d'Orsay a dozen times and admired it but didn't SEE it. During my last visit to Paris in March 2013, I spent hours in the salon with the Van Gogh's, sketching them and being amazed at the beauty and brilliance of his work. The church in Auvers was one of his last works, completed in June 1890. There is no visible entrance to the church which is completely in its own shadow and there is a diverging path that goes on either side of the building. There is much speculation about his meaning behind this work, but personally I think he was struggling with a dark emptiness and searching for the divine at the end of his life. I absolutely love this painting and hope you will enjoy having it in your home. It is painted on a thick gallery wrapped canvas with black edges. It can be hung as is, or framed.
