Certain paintings tend to offend, move us, rattle our cage or even tell our story, they stop us in our tracks, give us chills or make our hearts hurt. For these reasons, art cannot be argued with, the emotions are personal and authentic. Even as the artist this painting deeply offends me and unsettles me to my core. I dedicate it to my Grandma Ola, Grandmother Leola, and my mother Jayleta. All three of these women had leadership skills and teaching gifts that were underutilized and undervalued by the church. They served in silence, many times outside of their area of giftedness, because it needed to be done. Their ministry was quietly done behind the scenes, even though they were each gifted to lead. I also dedicate this painting to you and your daughters, my sisters in Christ, who have been told to be quiet, that your gifts of leadership, preaching, teaching, administration, and shepherding are not needed in the church. Your gifts ARE needed and your gifts and talents are not a mistake. Please, if you are not already, find your voice and lead with conviction and strength, you are not alone.

This painting illustrates our past, but may it not show our future. May a day come very soon when our daughters, nieces, and granddaughters look at this painting with uncomprehending eyes at an era when their gifts would not have been valued. May the day come quickly, when everyone will be encouraged to use their gifts fully to the glory of God.

I've signed this work with my name and "sDg" which stands for the latin phrase "soli Deo gloria" "to God alone be the glory."
