I found this spot in Stauffer Chapel on a drizzly day during the Pepperdine Bible Lectures. I set up my paint box and easel and did a quick 8x10 plein air painting to capture the colors, light and composition. This painting is a large studio version of that same smaller painting. The open door was a significant theme during the PBL 2015 for many reasons, one of which was that it was the first time a woman preached. My friend Sara Barton was that woman, and her words of wisdom, grace, and hospitality have stayed with me, "Who is your neighbor? For the love of God, pick one!" May the open door of hospitality welcome the stranger, those who are afraid, the outcast, the poor, the down-trodden, those who feel alone. May they know they have a place and are welcome.
